Project Management Methodologies

Project management methodologies are structured approaches used to plan, execute and deliver projects. Different methodologies suit different types of projects and selecting the appropriate approach is important for achieving successful outcomes.

Waterfall

A traditional, linear approach where each phase of the project is completed before moving to the next. It is best suited to projects with clear requirements and minimal expected changes.

Agile

A flexible and iterative approach that focuses on continuous improvement, collaboration and adapting to change. It is well suited to dynamic environments where requirements may evolve.

Lean

A methodology focused on maximising value while minimising waste. It aims to improve efficiency by eliminating unnecessary processes and activities.

Choosing the Right Methodology

Selecting the appropriate project management methodology depends on the nature of the project, the level of uncertainty and organisational needs. There is no one-size-fits-all approach and effective project managers must choose or adapt methodologies to suit specific contexts.

  • The complexity and size of the project

  • The level of uncertainty or change expected

  • The need for flexibility or structure

  • Stakeholder requirements and expectations

  • Organisational culture and experience
